I do not think he understood the reply you stated to me. Jon, You are right about Barton. I do think it should be dropped though. It is not going to get us anywhere near the truth. They agreed on the political theology and that is what is relevant to this topic.
The way to beat them is to show that there political theory is way off from that of the Founding. They have to bring in natural law which most refuse to do. Lets focus on that. I think Amos is in the same boat. Or are there differences in how liberals and conservatives choose to use the founding generation? There is a difference usually between the way conservatives talk about the Founders and liberals talk about the Founders. Conservatives tend to be originalists, or borderline politically fundamentalist, in their appeal to the Founders.

When you think about the fact that they were so divided that they nearly turned to arms, it becomes even more problematic in my mind that that statement should ever be uttered. It strikes me that Jefferson would be very pleased to know that the Founding Fathers still matter.
Jefferson himself is the one that in his disputes with the other Founders would refer to these "true principles of the Revolution" and he would talk about the But I suspect that at least some of them would be fully on-board with their thought being relevant if it was understood in the way that they wanted it to be understood.
