Can you go pripyat

All of the 50, people living in the nearby town of Pripyat, which had been constructed in the s to house power-plant workers and their families, were immediately evacuated. An estimated , people were evacuated from the area around the plant. Eventually an area of around 1, square miles was designated the Exclusion Zone.

Travel to the area was prohibited. In the years that followed, nature took over the abandoned area. Now, as Chernobyl becomes a popular destination for people interested in extreme tourism or the history of nuclear disaster, one major question remains: Is Chernobyl safe? Even about living there, they say that the people living there are healthy," said Franka Hummels, a Dutch author and journalist who spent years traveling to the exclusion zone in Belarus to conduct research for a book on Chernobyl.

But that doesn't mean it is healthy to live there. Officially, 31 people died in the Chernobyl disaster. But researchers estimate that thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, may have died or fallen ill from exposure to radiation after the accident. Although the reactor is now fully covered by a new steel structure it is still unnerving to stand within yards of the building that caused all the problems so many years ago.

Showing results of Tobyboy Dover, UK. I don't want to dive into too much detail here but I'll give you the basic idea. Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was undergoing a safety test at the time of the accident. Long story short, there was a power surge which could not be stopped, leading to a steam explosion which blew the ton lid off the reactor, followed by a second, even larger explosion. The accident caused tons of radioactive elements like Plutonium, Iodine and Caesium to be ejected into the atmosphere, contaminating thousands of square kilometres of land for centuries to come.

The full story is way more complicated than that, but I don't want to dive into any physics or anything because I'm only 13 and would probably get everything wrong. I'm in love with the story of Chernobyl, and have been researching the story for a while now. If you want to learn more, HBO's Chernobyl series is really good; that's where I picked up my interest for Chernobyl and learnt most of what I know today.
