I have several pieces of advice for those seeking information on Newport Beach for a possible visit during the summer months. Especially for those who might be in the area for DIsneyland in Anaheim and want to do one of those great "out of park local attractions". The locals know what sort of treasure they have on the peninsula here and they flock to it. Otherwise you will not find parking. It's worth the money. I can give you this advice because I followed none of it. On a Saturday in July, against my better judgement and with a day free to fill, I headed to the beach with my kiddo.
After taking 30 minutes longer than usual due to traffic, we then spent approx 75 minutes driving up and down the peninsula through every parking lot, street, and alley searching for parking. Once we found it, it turned out to be a minute spot. Breaking down in tears on the side of the road while your 12 yr old looks at you in exasperation, is not really the way you want to spend a vacation day. We missed a scheduled whale-watching tour and a planned parasailing excursion due to this parking debacle.
We headed back to Anaheim, valet'd the car at an outlet mall, bought candy, did some shopping, and went to a movie. We had a great day in the end but definitely not at Newport Beach. We visited in April It was sunny and breezy and the storm cloud formations on the horizon were beautiful.
You can see down the beach for miles and locals fish from the pier. There is also a great view of the hillside homes that are featured in The OC tv show. Ruby's diner is located on the pier. There is not a lot of indoor seating but the view and 50's decor are great. We enjoyed some ice cream treats as we walked that were sooo yummy and fat filled. We ate dinner at BJ's located half a block into town from the pier all located on 1st St.
Bj's had great deep dish pizza and was kid friendly. Be aware as you walk down the sidewalk that there is a bar next door to BJ's filled with staggering surfers. They seemed harmless but loud and clumsy. The quality of the views and pizza far out weighed their volume and it was Newport was a wonderful mini-escape from the manufactured joy of Disneyland the focus of our vacation. This is the largest estuary where the fresh water and the salt water come together in Southern California and provides space to jog, bike, hike and kayak. In the winter it's on the 'North American Flyway' and is home to up to 30, migrating birds. It's also an underwater diving zone as well as has hiking and biking trails of various degrees of dificullty.
In the spring it's also a dolphin birthing ground but it's not unusual to see the dolphins playing offshore all year round. Very easy, nice airport to get into and out of. There is SO much to do here. Shopping, restaurants, bars, boogie boarding, bike rides - it has it all. The beach is clean and everyone is there to have a good time. If you want to slow it down, then go for a walk on the beach or pier. You will not be disappointed.
